Kingussie’s Wee Gem Gets a Polish
Kingussie Community Development Company (KCDC) has won a £9000 SMT grant for work on the Creag Bheag path near the hill’s summit. The path is “the jewel in the crown” of the town’s 20-mile path network, and will soon provide an even finer circular hill walk, with fantastic views across the Spey valley.
What is happening to our Wild Mountains?
The wild Scottish mountains are important to hillwalkers so the SMT wants to ensure they are valued and protected. While Scotland has large areas of wild mountains a report released early in 2022 reveals that this “wildness” is in long-term decline, and the rate of loss is growing.

Is it snowing on Ben Nevis?
In 2018 the SMT provided funding to install a webcam and weather station at the CIC hut that broadcasts information about the conditions on Ben Nevis.
The Munro Legacy
In 2019, the centenary of Sir Hugh’s death, the Munro Society has mounted a fine travelling exhibition, The Munro Legacy, and the Trust is delighted to have contributed £1000 to the venture.
Support for Hebrides Mountain Rescue Team
Hebrides Mountain Rescue Team has probably the biggest territory of any team in Scotland; all the way from Mingulay to the Butt of Lewis. What it hasn’t had up to now is a permanent base. A grant of £8,000 from the Trust has brought that a step nearer.
The new Carnach bridge
The Trust was proud to be a major funder of this project to restore a footbridge over a powerful river, more than 10 km from a road, a gateway to the wild hills of Knoydart and now part of the Cape Wrath Trail!
Help for paraclimbing pioneers
A grant from the Trust will help more people with dis- abilities to enjoy climbing, both indoors and out.
Goatfell summit path
The last 400 m of the main track up Goatfell are never going to be a stroll, but thanks to path work this year they’ll be safer and more enjoyable. The Trust provided £5,000 towards the project.
Winter skills training
Midwinter 2020 sees groups of young people bridging the gap between summer and winter mountaineering, in courses subsidised by the Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust (JCMT)
The film evening that goes on and on
The Dundee Mountain Film Festival is the UK’s longest continuous running mountain film festival, and the SMT has supported it for 37 years.
A journey to recovery
In November 2016 eight Carlton Athletic Recovery Group members went on an emotional journey to Everest Base Camp helped by grants of £4500 from the SMT.

The Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland (OATS), supported by a £12000 grant from the Trust, has removed the white scar on Carn Liath of Beinn a Ghlo.
